No persons knew this better than the grandmothers of the founders, Tanya and Robert, who, by coincidence both are named Pauline. Rob’s grandma Pauline was a librarian who served her community in Iowa and Missouri. Tanya’s nana Pauline was an avid baker, teaching women basic fundamentals of cooking, sewing, and baking, in addition to being a dental technician. Agnes was orphaned at the age of three. Her father, Celso, trying to save a baby sheep during a storm was struck and killed by lightning. Her mother, Marcelina, was six months pregnant at the time with their eighth child. She passed away during child birth leaving Agnes and her seven siblings orphaned. The children were unfortunately separated and sent to orphanages throughout New Mexico. The girls were all sent to Loretta Industrial School for girls in Santa Fe, NM. The boys all sent to St. Anthony Home for Boys in Albuquerque, NM. Agnes was adopted by a family at a young age and later reunited in adult life with her surviving siblings. If not for the dedicated service of those committed to the care and eduction of orphaned children, Agnes would not have had the opportunity to lead a full life including being the grandmother to one of our founders, Tanya. His brother, Eric, was born blind. His ability to learn, adapt, and thrive in this world was challenged at every turn throughout his life as he navigated a world that was not built to support the visually impaired. The Walker Family Giving Foundation has established this grant to support people and organizations that support the endeavors of the blind. Eric has been a true inspiration to many. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Distributive Major, with a minor in History. Eric works and has learned to snow ski. Robert’s late father, Jim, embodied this belief as he served our nation in the Air Force and throughout his life through a career in Law Enforcement and Education.
